Cryogenic Bearing Selection Checklist for LNG Equipment

A minimum temperature such as −196°C is important, but it is not a complete bearing specification. Medium, thermal cycle, equipment architecture and mechanical duty must be reviewed together.

Define the medium and temperature profile

Identify LNG, liquid nitrogen or the actual process medium. Provide normal, minimum and maximum temperatures, cooling and warm-up cycles, dwell time and whether the bearing is submerged, exposed to vapor or thermally separated from the process.

Identify the equipment and bearing arrangement

State whether the requirement is for a pump, compressor, motor, transfer unit or test machine. Include the shaft layout and whether the requested bearing is single, DF, DB, DT or another arrangement. A suffix must be interpreted as part of the complete designation.

Provide speed, load and operating cycle

Give normal and maximum speed, estimated radial and axial loads, start-stop frequency, shock or vibration, direction changes and expected operating duration. If exact loads are unavailable, send the equipment drawing and operating data for engineering review.

Confirm materials, clearance and lubrication

Low-temperature contraction can affect fits, clearance and internal geometry. Lubrication, cage, seals and materials also depend on the medium and temperature cycle. These fields should remain subject to documented engineering confirmation rather than being inferred from another brand's catalog.

Final checks before inquiry

Is a −196°C label enough to approve a bearing?

No. It indicates a temperature requirement, but equipment, medium, arrangement, speed, load, materials and lubrication still need confirmation.

What do DF, DB and DT mean in an inquiry?

They identify face-to-face, back-to-back and tandem arrangements for matched bearings. The actual set and preload or clearance must be confirmed for the equipment.

Can another manufacturer's performance data be reused?

It may help identify a reference, but it should not be presented as verified GSNK performance without engineering confirmation.
